Samsonite Rolling Luggage Is RuggedI think if I were to get luggage, I'd choose Samsonite. They used to have commercials where they'd throw their luggage out of an airplane. It would fly through the air and land on the ground. It would obviously sustain some damage; but far less than you would imagine it should. They also manufacture the popular 'American Tourister' line of luggage. So, if you're looking to buy a new set, you can never go wrong if you purchase samsonite rolling luggage. The Samsonite Cosmolite is a very interesting design. It has a seashell scallop pattern on the side and sort of looks like the old 1940s steam radiators did. The Samsonite 20" Carry On Spinner is about $400 on-line. It has a hard side exterior, cross ribbons in the bottom to keep things neat and tidy, a fixed TSA combination lock.
With a TSA lock, it has a symbol on it that shows that this lock can be opened by the authorities if they need to use a special master key. If the lock was opened, the indicator changes from green to red so you can know that it was unlocked. Because the TSA has said to people that they must bring their luggage, unlocked, then a TSA approved lock is the way to go. They come built-in to luggage, or you can also buy settable combination padlocks. Their Helium Fusion series is a big seller because of their rugged fiberglass graphite frame. This makes them very strong and light. Out of all of the reviews, people tend to complain most about the zippers. I understand why zippers could be the problem with all soft-sided luggage because I went cross-country by bicycle twice; and the biggest problem we always had were zippers catching, breaking, or sticking. When nylon zippers get dirty, they don't' work very well after that. We would wash the zipper, then spray silicon on the zipper. Also, if you pull too hard on the zipper pull, zippers will do poorly after that. If you ever have a zipper come apart, you should try and use a pair of wide lineman's pliers to press the zipper's close gadget back together a little bit. They tend to spread wide, and when they do the zipper no longer works well. This is why hard-side cases are much better in the long run. I would always recommend hard-side cases, myself; but they are much heavier than nylon or leather cases would be.
