Hard Sided Luggage - Built To LastIf I were to pay a lot of money for luggage, I think I'd choose hard sided luggage. The reason is more because zippers just aren't very reliable. I went cross-country by bicycle twice, and both times I had zippers on my sleeping bags, on the tent, on the pannier bags and on other packages that I took with me. In the first week, the tent zipper had already started acting up, and this was on a very expensive North Face Expedition tent. Even the most expensive YKK zippers don't work very well once they get dirty or dusty. Then, because you have to pull on them harder in order for them to pull closed, the closing mechanism tends to get bent outwards just a bit. This outwards bending angle tends to cause the zipper to start to separate or catch. Hard sided luggage will keep this from occurring. They tend to have very good closures on hard-sided luggage.

If you purchase luggage that's made from Polycarbonate, then it will be able to last just about any abuse you could give it because polycarbonate is what they make bulletproof plastic from. Way on the other end of the spectrum is the international traveller luggage. It is the lightest luggage in the world, but if you ran over it with a car - it's probably going to be pretty flat when you get to it. Therefore you basically have a few choices. You can pick hard sided luggage or soft-sided. You can choose two wheels or four wheels; and you can pick nylon, leather or hard plastic (best being polycarbonate). The advantage of purchasing hard sided luggage is, it basically lasts forever. In fact, it lasts longer than the style of your luggage will last. |
